ETS Description & History
Educational Talent Search, Shasta (ETS-Shasta) at UC Davis is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Education designed to encourage and support middle school and high school students who will be the first generation of their families enter a college or university.
Purpose
The ETS-Shasta program is a program designed to encourage and support at-risk, low-income and first generation middle school and high school students in obtaining their high school diploma and enrolling in a post-secondary institution. It is federally funded through the U.S. Department of Education.
Program History
In 2002, the ETS-Shasta Program was approved for a grant and began providingservices to students from local middle and high schools in Shasta County. ETS-Shasta is a non-profit program serving 600 students.
Talent Search
ETS-Shasta serves young people in grades 6 through 12. ETS Shasta identifies and assists students from disadvantaged backgrounds and communities who have the potential to succeed in higher education. In addition to counseling, participants receive information about college admissions requirements, scholarships and various student financial aid programs. ETS-Shasta helps students who are from families where neither parent graduated from college to better understand their educational opportunities and options.
ETS Shasta is one of 8 TRIO programs that were authorized by the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to President Lyndon Johnsons War on Poverty (source: www.ed.gov/HEP/trio & A Profile of the Federal TRIO Programs: 2002).
